I wrote a blog called #nicenotes. The link: http://projectsticksandstones.weebly.com/blog.
Here is a little excerpt from it:
What is the #nicenote campaign? #Nicenote is a campaign that gives people the opportunity to find the good in others. It is intended to get people to immediately judge others for the good rather than the bad. It is a opportunity to send virtual compliments! |
This past weekend, I was able to comment on the viral post of the Mormon missionary who had been in Brussels at the time of the terrorist attack. I noticed that there were many comments from people bashing the Mormon church and saying other negative things about this missionary. This irked me and so I responded the following:
"This post is intended for Christians of any church: I think it's sad how some people on this thread are using this young man's testimony of his faith to criticize the Mormon church. Regardless of what you believe Mormons believe, we should all act like Christians and be grateful this young man is still alive. We should put our differences aside and unite in one thing that makes us similar and that is faith. If faith is a motivating factor in our lives to do good, it shouldn't matter what others have faith in. As Christians we need to remember what it actually means to be Christian and seek to center our lives on Christ like attributes, and Not use this as an opportunity to criticize Mormons. Who knows? Maybe when we do this our love and understanding of Mormons can grow and we may find out things we never knew! Maybe we will even find that they are Christian and we've been wrong all along. I just pray that we won't be so quick to criticize and judge, especially when there are so many things in our own lives that we need to change to be better followers of Christ."
I didn't except very much feedback, however I received many likes and comments. I am now at 2,732 likes and 172 comments! It has been really cool to be a part of something that has gone so viral, and I do consider this viral for me since the most likes I have ever gotten is around 300 and they are usually only from my friends. The conversation was good too, most people that commented were really positive.
This definitely applied to this class about our goal to share goodness.

My work has been communicating this week about how we want to produce more content than we had originally planned. We were able to plan more content that we can produce that we will be working on within the coming weeks. Furthermore, this week I was able to meet with a small number of my group to create vines that are just short uplifting messages. We plan to share these vines on social media outlets as well as on our website. I also personally want to produce visual content that can be beneficial to our campaign.
Also, after learning about the 4th pattern, which is to produce narratives, I want to be more aware of people around me that have stories that we can highlight in content that we produce.

This week one class really inspired me. In a student's presentation to the class about how to share content, it made me want to become more aware and educated on the process it takes through social media sites of how to share content and get it to spread. I plan to work on social media sites with small businesses to get their business out there and make people more aware of it. I want to become an expert on the different aspects of social media so that I can be more successful in this job of sharing content and getting it to spread. I know that as I seek this knowledge, I will be given experiences that will help me to learn it.

In our group, one of our main goals is to be a more positive influence in the world by contradicting any negativity. This week I was able to seek to be a positive influence to others. First, I had an opportunity this week to be surrounded by family and friends. I noticed that as I smiled more and sought to have more positive language, others were uplifted as well. Another thing I was able to do was when classmates were speaking negatively about things and people, I told them that we should stop being bullies. It is easy to do things and not realize it, but I was able to help them achieve our goal of stopping bullying. I was also able to share a video on Facebook about how Steve Harvey feels about bullying and what we can do to not give those that bully a voice. Because I shared this video, others were able to share it on Facebook. I want to continue to be an influence for good in the world whether it be to smile or to speak up when others don't realize they are being negative. I also think that sharing positive messages on Facebook is a great way to spread good in the world because it allows others to be prompted to share positivity as well.

My group was able to post a blog, video, and visual on the evolution of bullying this week. I was able to participate in creating a visual that went along with the video with the theme, "It only takes one, be the one to stop bullying." Once we posted it, I then shared it onto my Facebook and I've already had someone share it. In order for our campaign to be successful, it is important to share this content with others in hopes that it will in turn be shared by others.
Another thing that I was able to apply to what I did this week, was from what we learned about in lecture. We learned the second pattern that makes people share and see our content. This pattern was to use triggers so that people continue to talk about it after the fact. In our video, there are a lot of things that trigger memory. For example, we associate the Holocaust, slavery, civil rights movements, etc to bullying. Now when I think about those historical events, I associate it with bullying.

This week we did not have class, but I was able to put in a couple of hours of work for our bullying campaign. I was able to meet with a few members of my group to put together a storyboard for our coming video. We are going to do a video that shows the history of bullying, from Cain and Able, to modern day cyber bullying. We are also going to show statistics and in the end show how one person can make a difference. Kat and I are in charge of writing a script for this that will be very simple and to the point. Then we were able to film this video on Friday. I am very hopeful about this video and think that it will send out a good message.
I also had my midterm interview this week and it was good to sit down with Professor Zurcher and discuss the things I have been accomplishing in the class. From that interview, I am going to strive to participate more in class and contribute anything that I know will be helpful.

This week for this class I was able to write a blog post about positive vs. negative words. I was able to share an experience I had in high school when one person stood up against a bully and won.
Here is an excerpt from my blog post:
When I was in high school, someone anonymously came out with the Facebook profile, "Gossip Girl." Gossip Girl would post negative comments about the kids at school. The effects of online bullying quickly became the topic of every conversation. Everyone I went to school with seemed to be directly or indirectly effected by it. It was getting out of control and something needed to be done. Who knew what other damage this negativity could do?
Then, someone took a stand. A new Facebook profile popped up called AJ Barnabas. AJ Barnabas counteracted everything that "Gossip Girl" said and spread positivity throughout the school. And from my perspective, it was a hit. Students overcame the effects of online bullying and began expressing their gratitude towards AJ Barnabas for sharing positive messages instead of negative ones. Soon after the appearance of the anonymous AJ Barnabas, Gossip Girl disappeared.
The power of ONE influenced hundreds.
At first, the negativity was like poison spreading throughout the school. Gossip Girl was changing people's perspectives of others and of themselves. People were stirred to believe things that weren't true. That is way too much power to put into one person's hands.
But, the power of positive words is something that should be in everyone's hands. Fortunately, one person did speak up and make a difference. The power of positive words was enough to stop the course of this bully right in their tracks.

This week in one of my communications classes I did a presentation on why some bullying victims are more newsworthy than others. In my presentation I compared two bullying victims that had been studied by the authors of the textbook for the class. Newsworthiness is dependent upon race, gender, ethnicity, etc. A white teenage girl living in a suburban area was more newsworthy than an African-American boy who people thought was gay, even though he never identified as gay. According to the book, in mainstream media, stories are more likely to be big if it is about victims that fit the role of being white and straight. There are so many different aspects to bullying, it is interesting to find what research is out there.

"Treat others the way THEY would want to be treated"
In this class and one of my other communications classes we have been talking about personalities and strengths of myself and those that I work with. I have been learning the importance of understanding why someone is the way that they are so that I can more easily work with them.
One of my classmates said the golden rule should be "treat others the way they would want to be treated." I have internalized this and instead of looking at what others can change, I look at what I can do to strengthen my relationships with whoever I come into contact with.
