March 30, 2016: Applications

This past weekend, I was able to comment on the viral post of the Mormon missionary who had been in Brussels at the time of the terrorist attack. I noticed that there were many comments from people bashing the Mormon church and saying other negative things about this missionary. This irked me and so I responded the following:
"This post is intended for Christians of any church: I think it's sad how some people on this thread are using this young man's testimony of his faith to criticize the Mormon church. Regardless of what you believe Mormons believe, we should all act like Christians and be grateful this young man is still alive. We should put our differences aside and unite in one thing that makes us similar and that is faith. If faith is a motivating factor in our lives to do good, it shouldn't matter what others have faith in. As Christians we need to remember what it actually means to be Christian and seek to center our lives on Christ like attributes, and Not use this as an opportunity to criticize Mormons. Who knows? Maybe when we do this our love and understanding of Mormons can grow and we may find out things we never knew! Maybe we will even find that they are Christian and we've been wrong all along. I just pray that we won't be so quick to criticize and judge, especially when there are so many things in our own lives that we need to change to be better followers of Christ."
I didn't except very much feedback, however I received many likes and comments. I am now at 2,732 likes and 172 comments! It has been really cool to be a part of something that has gone so viral, and I do consider this viral for me since the most likes I have ever gotten is around 300 and they are usually only from my friends. The conversation was good too, most people that commented were really positive.
This definitely applied to this class about our goal to share goodness.

Voting Group Questionnaire by the Voting Group

Summary:
Am I registered to vote?
No

What reasons do I have for not voting?
I want to vote, I just haven't gotten around to registering/I don't know how to register since I am from a different state.

I find politics... exciting?

When I talk to people about politics, I feel... excited.

The history of voting makes me feel...encouraged.
(I didn't really identify with any of these answers that they gave me the option to choose)

Politics are...a good way to learn about what my opinions are.

What kind of video content do I watch?
Funny videos because they are ways to just kick back and be entertained.

What kind of video content do I share?
Funny or feel good videos. I like people to be uplifted and I can help them feel uplifted through sharing those.

What kind of videos do I skip past on Facebook?
I skip past videos that are long. I don't like to watch long videos. It needs to be quick and too the point.

How long should a video be?
20 seconds to 1 minute

How likely am I to share political videos?
I would be likely to share it if it relevant to me and my opinions. I wouldn't just share something just because. I share it because I think other people will find it interesting.

What would I include in a video to encourage people to vote?
I really liked the video where you guys interviewed students to see what they know about current events. I really identified with that and I would definitely share it.
For another video that you can make? I am not sure. Maybe giving an incentive for voting? Or do an educational video where you help inform millennials of issues.

Application:
I didn't really like the questions asking about how I feel about politics because I don't feel that I can describe it in one word. There are many different aspects to politics that any of those answers could have applied.
I liked the questions asking about videos and content that I share. I don't see how this will help the voting group though.

More than Your Mind by the Mental Health Group

Summary:
I looked at the content of the website. There is a really good video that shows the experience of a girl named Megan and how depression has affected her. I really liked the video. It was really well done visually. I can tell that they were good with the video. As for the blogs and content. I found it harder to read those because there weren't very many visual breaks in one of the articles. The other one about food is better and easier to read, so I liked that one better. Some of the quotes are even hard to read because of the contrast of colors, but I really do like the quotes they used. I also like their contact page where you can message them stories. I think that is a really good idea and a way for more people to interact with them.
Overall the video was the strongest thing, but the website as a whole wasn't very consistent and visually appealing. However, I still think it is great content!

Applications:
I like the video because it is relatable. I also like how at the end of the video they used the caption "More than your mind." It goes great along with there message and kind of ties things in together. With the narrative that they had, I can be aware of situations of others around me, as well as know how to deal with my own struggles. I also can refer back to their website if I want to know what food I should eat if I feel anxious. I also would like to share my own story on their blog.
Also by analyzing their webpage I can see what works and what doesn't work for my own content. I can use there video as an example of a good video.

This week in class I really enjoyed the presentation by Paxton Gray. He brought a lot of new insight on how to develop successful content. With the information that I learned from him, I plan to understand my audience better in whatever campaign that I do. With my husband and mine's business, there are many different aspects to understand when targeting our audience. I want to brainstorm, research, brainstorm, research, and create content that will go directly to my intended audience. I want to get to know each of our different audiences and care about them so that I can produce successful content for our business.
As for this class, I wish that we had had this presentation at the beginning to help us understand how to work smart, instead of hard. Though hard work is important, I want the content that we produce to be successful and that comes when you work smart.
