March 17, 2016: Class Notes

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
  • Today in class we evaluated the pornography group and their content they have produced. They have a really cool video about the evolution of technology.
  • We also discussed pattern 4- the use of narrative within sharing content.
    • What is a narrative?
      • "We are all story creators and tellers. Narrative is a human means of organizing our interpretations of reality. The basic function of narrative is to provide meaning to events we encounter in our everyday lives."
      • Narratives are the personal stories entangled into everyday life, or the "accounts of experience and meaning conveyed through human language"
        • must contain realistic, empathetic, and liking-generating characteristics that push the audience to have an emotional connection with the story presented
        • relativity- usage of peers that possess similar characteristics
        • two parts to persuasive narrative messaging
          • audience transportation- ability a narrative has to immerse, engage, or absorb an audience member within the realm of the portrayed world. this mediator frequently serves as a central predictor of the overall persuasiveness of a presented message
          • identification- degree of recognition that audience members perceive to be like or identify with the character and story portrayed
        • details are important
        • character, conflict, reveal (the hook), resolution
        • be aware of other people's stories so that you can find narratives to tell
