The Evolution of Bullying:From Schoolyard to Smartphone 24/7 by Kaspersky Lab
Summary
This article was a brief analyse of how bullying has gone from face to face interaction to online interaction. Today 17% of children are cyber-bullied. 1 in 5 children between the ages of 12 and 15 are subject to cyberbullying. This is a crucial age for children as it is a time of development and puberty. The article suggests 4 ways that cyberbullying is more damaging than 'traditional' bullying:
1. It is anonymous.
2. It is hard to escape.
3. Online all the time.
4. It is more invasive than face-to-face interaction.
The article further argues that the more aware we are of the effects of bullying, the more we can help those who are bullied.
Application
It is useful to know that cyberbullying is occurring all over the world through social media. One way that it can be useful is to know the effects that I can personally have on those that I interact with through social media. I need to be aware of any negativity I give out towards others and seek to be positive and uplifting. I should use social media to be a positive influence towards others. Another reason that knowing cyberbullying is occurring is that it can make me aware of anyone I know being cyber-bullyied. By knowing of others who may be being cyber-bullied, I can try to counteract it and help that person being bullied to be empowered.
