Writing Tips for Blogs

What are my strengths as a writer? What do I need to continue to work on?

  • first person/second person
    • makes it conversational and personal 
    • don't overuse "you"
  • tone
    • be conversational 
    • avoid jargon and cliches
      • what are you trying to say?
  • traditional rules
    • be consistent
    • you can start sentence with conjunction (but, and)
    • you can end sentence with preposition 
    • paraphrasing dialogue
      • showing vs. tellingopinion
  •  opinion
    • represent facts fairly and accurately 

  • put emotion and personal stories
    • use bold/italics
    • avoid caps
    • one-liners
  • parallel repetition 
    • train tracks that drive the reader 
  • visual organizational cues
    • subheads
